Review: Aluratek Libre eBook Reader – ugly, but a good entry level option
Posted on 01. Mar, 2010 by JD in News, reader, review
It's no secret that Amazon's Kindle has become the iPod of digital readers. But, at $US259 for the base model (the larger-screened DX will run you $489), it's a pricey piece of hardware. Is there room for a cheaper device to swoop in and steal some of the market?
Aluratek certainly hopes so. The U.S. gadget [...]

It has the page turn [...]

What we didn’t know is that we’d be getting the 3G version straight up! Tasty.
As Australian Personal Computer mag reports the local [...]

Via www.mondaynote.com
Among Australian media executives, like everywhere else, the talk of the town is the iPad. I was in Sydney this week, giving a talk at the Media 2010 conference. This gave rise to vibrant discussions of the ways in which the Apple device could transform our industry.

Ebook piracy is good? My response to the howls of protest
Posted on 22. Feb, 2010 by JD in News, UK, blog
After publishing a post from The Guardian in the UK about how ebook piracy hardly exists at this point, but is probably inevitable, and may be a necessary evil to force us to rethink publishing, I have been deluged by howls of protest. Fair enough – you can find some of them in the comments [...]
Publishers (still) fighting basic ebook economics

From the fighting-basic-economics-is-never-a-good-idea dept…

Will Kindle apps kill off the device?
Posted on 19. Feb, 2010 by JD in News, blog, iPad, kindle
A day after the Kindle app lobbed onto the Blackberry (in the US only – hear the teeth gnashing elsewhere around the world?), it’s time to ask whether Amazon is in danger of apping themselves out of the Kindle hardware business. If that’s their goal, I think they’re heading in the right direction.
Let me explain: [...]
Kindle for BlackBerry app now available – US only
Posted on 18. Feb, 2010 by JD in News, kindle
Amazon is today adding BlackBerrys to its stable of Kindle-compatible devices and also taking the opportunity to remind us that it’s working hard on Mac and iPad versions of its software. The app is a freebie download for Americans (sadly it’s not international just yet) and should offer the same functionality as its PC [...]
Bookeen Orizon to ship this May with multitouch
Posted on 17. Feb, 2010 by JD in News, UK
via Engadget by Darren Murph on 2/16/10
We’re still patiently waiting for Sipix’s color e-paper to hit the commercial realm, but ’til then, we suppose we’ll pretend to be content with the monochrome variety. Bookeen, which obviously has a hard row to hoe in the slam-packed e-reader market, recently announced what appeared to be a relatively [...]
